A New School Year, A New Driver on the Road
August means Van Alstyne ISD is back in session, and for plenty of local families, it also means a teenager driving themselves to school, practice, and a part-time job for the first time. Many first cars are older hand-me-downs with plenty of miles on them — which makes a pre-school-year checkup one of the smartest things a parent can do.
The Big Three: Brakes, Tires, and Lights
Start with what keeps them safe. Brakes should stop the car smoothly, without grinding, squealing, or a soft pedal. Tires need healthy tread, correct pressure, and no cracking or bulges — remember, a new driver has less experience handling a skid or blowout than you do. Then walk around the car and check every light: headlights, brake lights, turn signals. It takes two minutes and matters more than most people think, especially with early-morning drives ahead.
The Stuff That Strands Them
Next, think about reliability. A battery over three or four years old — especially one that just survived a Texas summer — is a prime candidate for a no-start in the school parking lot. Belts, hoses, and fluid levels are worth a look too. And make sure the AC works, because an August car line in North Texas is no place for broken air conditioning.
See Everything We See — In Photos
The easiest way to check all of it at once? Bring the car to Kwik Kar of Van Alstyne. Our courtesy inspection covers brakes, tires, battery, fluids, lights, and more, and our Digital Vehicle Inspections send you actual photos of anything we find. No pressure, no mystery — just a clear picture of what the car needs now, what can wait, and what’s fine. Call 903-290-1786 or visit 1015 W Van Alstyne Pkwy, and send them into the school year with confidence.
